There are thousands upon thousands of air purifiers on the market today. Some come from longtime reputable companies, some from brand new ones that are trying to make the world a better (and cleaner) place, and others are made by people who are clearly just trying to make a buck.
That leaves all of us with the pressing question: What air purifier should I buy for my home? What’s the best air purifier for my family?
How Do I Find the Best Air Purifier for My Home
If you’re looking for the best possible air purifier for your home, you’ll probably want to find one that will last a long time, clean the air in your home very well, and not need a lot of maintenance.
Yes, that might seem obvious, but we needed to get that out of the way before we went too much further.
Why’d we need to get it out of the way? Well, there’s a lot of science-y stuff that I’m about to throw at you and I wanted you to know why I was going to say it all.
The Science Behind Finding a Good Air Purifier
If you’re not interested in the science behind all of this, scroll on down to the next section labled “Blueair 211+ Air Purifier” it’s right beside the picture of the black and white air purifier. If you are interested in a quick science tour, then buckle in!
I’ll be addressing the three marks of a good air purifier that I mentioned above, so feel free to hop between them in whatever order you want to answer your questions.
How Do I Find an Air Purifier that Will Last?
There’s a lot of stuff that goes behind finding an air purifier that will last. It isn’t all about finding one that has a filter that keeps on trucking for years on end–its about finding a machine that won’t break on you any time soon!
So, how do you find machines that fit the bill?
Well, we find that it’s a little hard to gauge that when you’re shopping for air cleaners that are brand new, instead, we like to look to machines that have been produced for several years by well-established companies and/or companies that offer long warranties.
Why do you want to find a machine that’s “old” and been around for a couple of years? Well, that’s a sign that they are tried and true! If an air purifier is constructed by a worthwhile company, they’ll constantly improve their air cleaner’s design and address any shortcomings that they may have. Additionally, machines that have been around longer will have more reviews from people. Some of those reviewers will be from people who have had those very machines for several years, which shows how long they’ll last for you! The air purifier that we’re looking at today has been around for a few years and it comes from a well-known and established air purifier manufacturer called Blueair. We love their products!
Why do we look at the warranties that are offered? Well, a warranty means that the company stands behind their work, when someone offers you a two or three-year warranty for free, you know that they are sure about the quality of their product! That being said, offering even a warranty that you pay for is still a lot more than what some companies do, so keep an eye out for that when you’re doing your shopping. The air purifier we’re looking at today offers a few warranty options, so you might want to start your search there!
What Air Purifiers are Best at Cleaning the Air?
The best air purifiers for cleaning your home’s air will need a few things. Most people benefit from having an air purifier that takes care of allergens, dust, smoke, odors, and more.
Alright, I’m sure you all know that, so here’s what you should look for:
- A HEPA Filter
- An Activated Carbon Filter
- A Pre-Filter
There are other things that we recommend, but they aren’t as important for everyone. These “extras” that we like include UV sanitizers that will kill airborne germs like bacteria and viruses. UV sanitizers can also neutralize airborne mold spores that might be trying to take hold in your home. We also like to find air purifiers that have air ionizers. Ionizers are a nifty addon that furthers your air purifier’s air cleaning capabilities. They use ionized air to knock particles like dust out of the air you’re breathing!
The air purifier we’re looking at today is an interesting one, however. It doesn’t use an air ionizer or a UV sanitizer to capture particles and kill germs. Instead, they have a nifty piece of technology called an “electrostatic plate”. These aren’t used in a lot of air purifiers, but they’re one of our favorite things. Why? Because they last for-stinking-ever. No, they don’t actually last forever, but they do last a VERY long time, in our experience. This is a great sign that this air purifier is going to last for you!
If you’d like to read more on what air filters are for and why they’re important, we’ll address a little bit more in this post. If you want to know a lot more on them, then feel free to check out our post that’s all about air purifier air filters.
What Air Purifiers Don’t Need a Lot of Maintenance?
We know how dreadful it can be to constantly keep up on things that are easy to forget about. An air purifier is one of those things that you’ll turn on and most likely forget entirely about checking on as it does its thing all day every day.
Now, you might be wondering what kind of maintenance air purifiers need. Odds are you’re like we were before we learned all about air purifiers and you think it’s something you plug in once and forget about.
Sadly, it’s not. It’s sort of like a vacuum–you have to clean it out every now and then.
So, how often are you going to have to clean your air purifier? In most cases, probably not too often. So long as your home’s air isn’t too dirty/smoky, your air purifier shouldn’t need to get a new filter or have its filter washed more than once every six months. The Blueair air purifier that we’re looking at today is one of the air purifiers that will need a new filter roughly every six months. Something super neat about this unit is that it will tell you when it needs its filter replaced, which will help you with the hassle! (More on this machine’s filters later.)
If you’d like to read more on how air purifiers work, then we’ve got an article for you. You can check it out here.
Blueair 211+ Air Purifier
Blueair has been around for a very long time. They’ve been making air purifiers before I, the author, was even born! Because of this history, they know what they’re doing when it comes to making air purifiers. They’re so good at it that they win all sorts of recognitions all the time.
Today, we’re looking at one of their air purifiers that’s great for anyone’s home. This unit, the Blueair 211+ Air Purifier, is one that everyone loves.
But why do people love the Blueair 211+ Air Purifier?
For starters, it’s crazy easy to use. There are lots of air purifiers out there that have a million dials and buttons, none of which most people will understand. Unless you’re an air purifier expert like us, you’ll just look at all those settings and get a little scared about what you might be turning on. f
That’s not an issue with this air purifier. All you have to worry about is one single button.
Yeah, it only has one button.
But does it work as well as the air purifiers with a trillion settings? Yes, it does. In fact, this air purifier will do more than a lot of air purifiers that we’ve seen that offer all of those different settings!
The Blueair 211+ Air Purifier uses a host of sensors to ensure that your home’s air remains clean. All you have to do it turn it on and appreciate the cleaner air.
And when it’s ready to have its filter replaced, it’ll have a red light illuminate around its sole button to notify you that it’s time! That means you don’t have to constantly check on it.
Something else that we love about this unit is that is has a washable pre-filter. While many pre-filters are in fact washable, it’s nice to see a company actually tell their consumers that the thing can be washed. But that’s not the coolest part–you can get different color pre-filters (which is the black bottom part of the above air purifier). If you’re constantly updating your home’s décor, this air purifier can change with you! While this is a very minor thing in the grand scheme of things, we still think it’s cool.
Finally, it’s time for filter talk. This air purifier has a whole slew of air filtration going on. Thanks to its various systems, it can effectively capture smoke, dust, allergens, dangerous VOCs, airborne pet hair, and so much more. On top of that, it can kill bacteria and viruses, which can be a literal lifesaver.
All in all, this is one of the best air purifiers on the market today! We can’t recommend it highly enough.
The Blueair 211+ is great for living rooms and other large rooms in your home. It is rated to cover areas up to 540 square feet, which makes it a great choice for those of us who have a kitchen that’s attached to our living rooms. If that doesn’t give you enough coverage though, we have good news; there’s another air purifier made by Blueair that’s exactly like this one, just for even bigger rooms!
The Blueair 121 is rated for rooms that are as big as 700 square feet, so you don’t have to worry if you’ve got a really big area to cover. If you’ve got several adjoining rooms then this might just be the perfect air purifier for you and your house!
